Spending time playing outside has been connected to long-term health benefits, better behavior, longer attention spans, more creativity, and time to unwind and relieve stress, even in children. Research has shown that children are spending far less time outside and more time in structured, indoor activities. To help parents reconnect their children to nature, Wargo Nature Center is starting new preschool programs geared at outdoor play.

“It is through play that children learn about themselves and the world around them….Most of what children learn during their early childhood years cannot be taught. It is discovered through play.” (Ruth Wilson, author of Young Children and Nature)

“Without frequent exposures with the natural environment, children are likely to develop fears, phobias, and prejudices to nature. Such attitudes and feelings can become major obstacles to later understandings of and respect for the natural world.” (Wilson, 1994)

Maple Hollow

Maple Hollow is our outdoor nature play area. It is designed to help kids develop a connection with the land at their own pace. Created as a place for children to play naturally and safely outdoors, Maple Hollow is filled with trees and rocks to climb over, grass to hide in, and dirt to dig in. There is a large turtle drum for children to create music with, a sand box to play in, and plants to touch and smell. The space was developed with the help of an Eagle Scout as well as community volunteers and the maintenance and natural resources units of the Anoka County Parks Department. Outdoor play is special because it encourages the use of all 5 senses and lets children use creativity and their large motor skills. When kids are outside in a safe and fun space they begin to develop positive life long memories and associations with nature. Come explore and see what is developing!
