The landscape of Bunker Hills regional park includes oak savannah, sand dunes and prairie and savannah restorations. A couple of unique natural resources and wildlife within the park include:
Eastern Whip-poor-will
Have huge mouths they use to scoop up 2 inch long insects out of the air. They lay their eggs directly on the forest floor but are so well camouflaged they are able to survive.Woodcock
Mostly nocturnal. Their bill has nerve endings that can detect earthworm movement beneath the soil.Eastern Hognose Snake
When frightened, hognose snakes make a loud hiss, coil, and flatten their heads into two or three times their normal body width. If the predator does not retreat, the snake often rolls over on its back and plays dead.Pasque Flower
One of the first prairie flowers to bloom in the spring. Their flower stalks are covered with silky hairs that protect the plant from spring frosts and late snowfall.Burr Oak
One of the most common trees in Minnesota. At maturity, their bark is very thick and deeply ridged feeling sometimes corky. This helps protect the tree from fire. -
